Understanding kidney disease
Knowledge can replace fear with a plan.
Chronic kidney disease can be quiet for years, especially in its early stages. A diagnosis does not mean that every person will quickly progress to kidney failure. Kidney function can change at very different rates, and early detection, regular monitoring and the right medical care can make a meaningful difference.
Know your kidney numbers
Two important measurements are eGFR, which estimates how well the kidneys filter blood, and uACR, which looks for albumin in the urine. Following these numbers over time helps a healthcare team understand kidney health and whether disease is stable or changing.
Protect the function you have
For many people, controlling blood pressure, managing diabetes when present, taking prescribed medicines correctly, avoiding tobacco, staying active, and following an individualized kidney-friendly eating plan can help protect kidney and heart health.
Ask early. Plan early.
Kidney care is not only about laboratory results. Ask what caused the kidney disease, what stage it is, what can be done to slow progression, which medicines or supplements may affect the kidneys, and when a nephrologist or renal dietitian should be involved.

There is always a next step.
A difficult kidney diagnosis can feel like the end of the story. It is not. For some people, the next step is protecting remaining kidney function. For others, it may be learning about dialysis, transplant evaluation, living donation, or supportive care. Even when kidney function becomes severely reduced, there are treatment pathways to discuss with a qualified kidney-care team. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis can replace part of lost kidney function; kidney transplantation may be an option for eligible patients; and some people choose comprehensive conservative care focused on symptoms and quality of life. Learning about these choices early gives patients and families more time to prepare and make informed decisions.

Kidney disease may become part of a person’s life, but it does not erase identity, relationships, goals or dignity.
Good kidney care can include medical treatment, nutrition, movement, sleep, emotional support and planning for the future. What is appropriate can change with kidney function, other health conditions and medications, so advice about fluids, protein, sodium, potassium and phosphorus should be individualized rather than treated as one diet for everyone.
Kidney Pro wants patients to feel prepared to participate in their own care: keep a current medication list, understand important lab trends, write down questions before appointments, bring a trusted person when helpful, and speak up when something does not make sense.
